Ginuwine Advent Calendar Day 9: “Merry Christmas”

Robert’s thoughts:

WHOOOA and we’re listening to an album for kids, as opposed to what I assumed was Gin’s target audience (horny African-American divorcees? dot biz?).

So yeah, on the heels of some VERY adult Christmas music, you get children’s voices, but they kind of sound like maybe adult voice actors’ impressions of children. It’s all quite unsettling. They’re giggle-whispering about how it’s Christmas over very par-for-the-non-Ginuwine-course sleigh and church bells.

And then there’s an electronic “dooboodoom” sound and we’re re-disoriented in Ginuwine world. Gin sings with a chorus.

“This is the day / Jesus was born / let’s celebrate / His Christmas / and nothing should be more important… than your saviorrrrrrr!”

I just want to note that that’s a line.

I don’t know. This song has me confused. It’s the first time that I’ve really felt like Ginuwine and I are similar. If I were an R&B singer who made a Christmas album that focused mostly around boning beneath a Christmas tree, I would feel compelled to make a fake Christmas song for my grandmother who is 98 and watches a lot of Fox News. That song would be terrible and phoned in and sound a lot like this. Ginuwine, if that’s what’s going on here, it’s cool. I get it.

Merry Christmas, Gin’.

JP’s thoughts:

This song wins the World’s Tallest Midget Award for being the best song on this album. This song is Ginuwine in his purest form, a poor man’s Keith Sweat. If you are an avid listener of the Delilah radio program you might actually hear this song again at some point.  I’m 69% sure he sampled the Muppet Babies for the intro.
